About BARI
Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute is the name of the organization (BARI)
Details: BARI has a long and illustrious history of its own. The Institute evolved into its current form through a series of transformations, beginning with a subordinate status under the Department of Land Records in the then-Bengal. The Bengal Department of Agriculture was founded as a sub-ordinate section of the Department of Land Records in the erstwhile Bengal in 1880, on the proposal of the Famine Commission. The Bengal Department of Agriculture was granted distinct status by Lord Curzon, the then Viceroy of India, in 1906, and a nuclear agricultural research facility was founded under this department in Tejgaon, Dhaka, the same year. In the year 1908, In the then-Bengal, the Bengal Department of Agriculture was founded as a subordinate branch of the Department of Land Records. The Bengal Department of Agriculture was granted distinct status by Lord Curzon, the then Viceroy of India, in 1906, and a nuclear agricultural research facility was founded under this department in Tejgaon, Dhaka, the same year.
On an area of 161.20 hectares of land, an experimental station known as Dhaka Farm was created in 1908. This Dhaka Farm served as a forerunner of BARI and other research institutes. The establishment of Dhaka Farm provided an excellent opportunity for doing field research. East Pakistan Department of Agriculture was renamed Bengal Department of Agriculture in 1947.
The department was divided into two divisions: research and extension. When the land of Dhaka Farm was bought for the establishment of Second Capital in 1962, it dealt a major blow to agriculture research (today called Sher-e-Bangla Nagar). In 1968, two new directorates were established: the Directorate of Agriculture (Extension and Management) and the Directorate of Agriculture (Research and Development) (Research and Education). The Agriculture (Research and Education) Directorate was primarily involved with research. This Directorate was also in charge of the Bangladesh Agricultural Institute (BAI) at Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. Later, in the 1980s and 1990s, two more agricultural colleges were established, one in Patuakhali and the other in Dinajpur. BARI was also in charge of these two agricultural colleges until they became universities. In the year 1971,
The previous provincial organization was tasked with national duties. Agriculture, like many other sectors, was born with a shortage of labor and insufficient administrative infrastructure. As a result, it was accurately assumed that a coordinated and complete research had been developed, and several significant judgments were made in 1973. The Presidential Order No. XXXII, which helps strengthen and reconstitute agricultural research groups and systems in the country, was another significant development in the year.
Further restructuring of research institutions followed as a result of following developments. Following the dissolution of the Directorate of Agriculture (Research and Education) in 1976, the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) was established as an autonomous and effective research organization with sufficient operational flexibility, structural modification, and improvement of regional and sub-stations through Presidential Order No. LXII.
